Food and drink

The richness of the food and drink of O Grove is based on their great fish and seafood and turn it into the food and drink capital of the Galician coast. There is a great variety of fish in the towns typical dishes, the most appreciated are hake, turbot, sea bass, seafood is the jewel of the Galician coast, shrimp, squid, crab, barnacles, mussels, oysters, and many more, not forgetting the spider crab and the lobster, king prawns and mussels.

Food and drink

This richness of seafood and fish are the main ingredients of the tasty dishes that must be accompanied by albariño wines. These sea products are very important for O Grove, this is why one of the towns main festivities is the food and drink fair of the "Festa do Marisco", declared of national tourist interest.
The "Festa do Marisco" is celebrated the first week of october. It is a food and drink fair where seafood is sold at popular prices. There is a great variety of sea food from the Arosa inlet, oysters, cockles, razor-shells, clams, prawns, scallop shells, shrimps, spider crabs, crayfish, barnacles and mussels.

Octopus and turbot can also be tasted every day at very reasonable prices at the fair.
Other festivities celebrated in O Grove are "Nuestra Señora del Carmen" on the 16th of July and the festivity of "San Martiño" on the 11th of November.

Beaches

The town of O Grove is formed by a small peninsula that divides the Arosa and Pontevedra inlets. The beauty of its coast and the island of La Toja has turned it into one of Galicias main tourist centers.

The climate is oceanic, with mild winters. Winter temperatures averaging at 50º F (10ºC) and summer temperatures at 68ºF (20ºC).

Beaches

The Lanzada beach is one of the biggest and best known of Galicia. It belongs to the towns of O Grove and Sanxenxo. It holds a blue flag awarded by the EU for its prime conservation and services, these include sailing, surfing or paragliding. There is a pilgrimage held on the first sunday of August and the ritual of the nine waves to gain fertility is followed by many. This ritual consists in bathing at midnight and allowing nine waves to pass.

Beaches

The town of O Grove has many different beaches. At the island of La Toja the beach is at the end of the bridge, there is one in the center of the town, called the Confin beach and surrounding the peninsula you can find the best beaches of the area: As Pipas, Mexilloeira, Area Grande, Los Franceses, Carreiro.

The coast of San Vicente do Mar is an endless succession of small and beautiful coves, ideal for those who prefer tranquility. On the southern side of town, and nearby to the Pedras Negras urbanization you can find the beaches of Area da Cruz, Balea, and Paxareiras where it rejoins with the A Lanzada beach.

There are many activities in O Grove: walking along the Arousa inlet, looking at the sea through glass compartments in boats and watching varied sea fauna, tasting the seafood offered on the same boat with some of our excellent wines like albariño.

Back on land you can visit the aquarium, it was the first one opened in Galicia. There you can enjoy a variety of species, from sharks to smaller fish. You can see the octopuses in their habitat, morays and lots of other species. Outdoors you can enjoy the bird exhibition run by a professional falconer. The public is invited to take part in the show and you can have the unforgettable experience of feeding an eagle while it is perched on your arm.

Another superb experience is to submerge in our waters with one of the many diving clubs on our coasts, with the guidance of professionals that will rent you the equipment and take you out to sea or dive from the shore.

And for those who love land sports we have a golf course where you can practice and perfect your putting, or have a wander through the beautiful green lanes or the well kept greens

You can also enjoy other sports like horse riding, cycling, surfing and sailing to have a wonderful visit to the magnificent town of O Grove.

Places of tourist interest

The island of La Toja was used for centuries by the neighbors of O Grove for farming. Half way through the nineteenth century it was made of private domain. Since then there is a spa seaside resort using the medicinal waters for therapeutic use, this made the number of visitors to the area increase, also favored by the excellent weather conditions of the island.

This fantastic island has a five star hotel, Gran Hotel Hesperia La Toja and four stars Hotel Louxo and Hotel Balneario. They have modern installations that mix the therapeutic spa tradition with the most modern leisure spa installations of the continent. There is also the newly inaugurated Thermal Club where you can follow anti-stress, slimming, beauty, and rejuvenating programs.

Places of tourist interest

This magnificent island also has a golf course for those sport lovers, garden walks and a commercial center, where you can rent bicycles for family rides for parties of 4 to 6 and have a ride round the island. For the night leisure time there are many possibilities, like the casino where you can enjoy being spectator or playing the leading role. You can also wander into the town at night and have a drink in one of the many pubs and discos.

O Grove is 45 minutes away from Santiago de Compostela where you can visit the fantastic cathedral and walk through the old streets.

You can also enjoy sea trips to visit the Cies islands in Vigo or the Ons island with its magnificent cliffs.
